The department employs eight academic staff members (two professors with doctoral degrees in geography and six associate professors with PhD degrees in geography), a laboratory manager, and two support staff members.

The Department of Geography of Ukraine prepares specialists:

  • Bachelor’s degree: educational program “Urban Studies, Spatial Planning, and Regional Development” in specialty 106 “Geography” and specialty 014.7 “Secondary Education (Geography)”;
  • Master’s degree: specialties 106 “Geography” and 014.7 “Secondary Education (Geography)”;
  • PhD program: Doctor of Philosophy training in specialty 103 “Earth Sciences”;
  • Doctoral program: Doctor of Sciences training in specialty 11.00.02 “Economic and Social Geography.”

A distinctive feature of the department’s educational activities is its continuous work on launching innovative specializations, programs, and courses.

In the fall of 1990, the year the department was founded, the first group of students specializing in “Geography of Ukraine” was formed. In 1997, the department enrolled the first students in the tourism management program, and in 2002, it graduated the first specialists in this field. In 2003, as a result of the division of the Department of Geography of Ukraine, a new structural unit was established within the faculty — the Department of Tourism. In 2016, the department founded a specialization in “Geo-urbanism and Spatial Planning” at the bachelor’s and master’s levels within the “Geography” specialty. In the summer of 2021, the department launched a new educational and professional program for the first (bachelor’s) level — “Urban Studies, Spatial Planning, and Regional Development” (specialty 106 “Geography”). During the time of its functioning, the department has trained more than 500 qualified specialists — specialists, bachelor’s, and master’s degree graduates.

The department’s research activities are highly diverse. In total, about 20 research areas are being developed. A distinctive feature of the department is the development of new and interdisciplinary research areas: political geography, ethnogeography, linguistic geography, toponymy, cultural geography, urban studies, spatial planning, and others. In some of these areas, the department holds leading positions in Ukraine. Regional geography of Ukraine and geography teaching methods in higher and secondary schools have been important components of scientific research since the department was founded.

Over the years, the department’s faculty members have published more than 80 monographs, textbooks, and teaching manuals, along with hundreds of scientific articles in Ukrainian and international journals. 23 PhD dissertations and two doctoral dissertations have been successfully defended within the department.

The department’s research topic, conducted within working hours, is “Geographical Issues of Development of Regions and Cities of Ukraine.” The department also includes a laboratory for the methodology of teaching geography and economics in secondary schools.

The Department of Geography of Ukraine was established in 1990. This department became the first of its kind in the history of various geographical institutions in Ukraine. The department successfully develops the field of Ukrainian geographical studies, initiated by the renowned Ukrainian geographer, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor F. D. Zastavnyi. The department employs eight academic staff members (two professors with doctoral degrees in geography and six associate professors with PhD degrees in geography) and three support staff members. The department has a laboratory for methods of teaching geography and economics in secondary schools.

The department prepares bachelors and masters in the following specialties: Specialty 106 “Geography” (specialization: “Spatial Planning and Geo-Urbanism”) and Specialty 014.07 “Secondary Education (Geography).”

The department’s mission is to train highly qualified geographers for various sectors of the national economy, in accordance with labor market demands. This is achieved through creative and innovative approaches to teaching and research, with a particular focus on Ukrainian geographical studies, fostering socially responsible citizens of Ukraine.

Strategic Goals for the Department’s Development

Development of a new educational and professional program based on the department’s specialization, which will allow taking into account modern labor market trends, increasing the practical orientation of education, expanding the educational opportunities of the department, and ensuring the realization of the scientific and pedagogical potential of its staff.

Improving the quality of educational services by updating the structure and content of the educational process on the basis of a competency-based approach and taking into account market needs.

Writing articles in journals included in scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, and presenting them at international scientific conferences.

Enhancing cooperation with future employers, particularly in the development of a new educational program offered by the department, as well as the traditional geography teacher training program.

Developing connections with geography departments of a similar profile in other regions of Ukraine and expanding international cooperation, which will promote the integration of the department into the national and global scientific and educational environment.

Basic values upheld by the Department of Geography of Ukraine: professionalism, responsibility, critical thinking, self-realization, innovation, humanity, patriotism, integrity, individual approach.

Історія кафедри

The Department of Geography of Ukraine is one of the leading educational and research centers for Ukrainian geographical studies in the country. It was established in May 1990 to address the need for intensifying regional and sectoral geographical research in Ukraine during the national movement for the restoration of state independence in the late 1980s. This department became the first of its kind in the history of various geographical institutions in Ukraine.

The department’s founder and first head was the renowned Ukrainian geographer, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor F. D. Zastavnyi (1929–2012).
