The Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management and Food Technologies was established within the structure of the Faculty of Geography at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 2021 (Order of the Rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv No. 0-22 dated March 18, 2021).
The Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management and Food Technologies trains specialists in the following fields:
241 “Hotel and Restaurant Management”
181 “Food Technologies”
The department has 17 lecturers and 2 teaching support staff.
The department also has a laboratory for “Food Technologies and Restaurant Service.”

In addition to classroom lessons, students gain knowledge and practical experience from leading professionals in the hospitality and food industries directly at the hotels, restaurants, and food enterprises in Lviv and the Western region of Ukraine.

Дослідження

The department develops the following research areas:

  • theory, methodology, and techniques of hospitality;
  • hotel and restaurant management;
  • international hotel and restaurant business;
  • management of corporate forms in the hotel and restaurant business;
  • implementation of innovative approaches in the hotel and restaurant industry;
  • improvement of food production technologies with enhanced biological value and health-promoting properties based on unconventional raw materials;
  • environmentally clean surroundings as an important factor in the production of health-oriented products and human health;
  • development of scientific foundations for the production of traditional national dishes of the Galician region and their adaptation to modern requirements of the hotel and restaurant business;
  • ecological principles of ensuring food quality and safety, food ecology;
  • current issues of implementing the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system in foodservice establishments;
  • physical recreation as a fundamental basis for the development of health resorts and wellness facilities in the Carpathian region.

On May 29, 2025, Associate Professor of the Department of Geoecology and Physical Geography Anatoliy Smaliychuk took part in the training “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management” (in a remote format).
He delivered a presentation on the topic “Multi-hazard Risk Assessment: Natural and Man-Made Hazards”, in which he presented methodological approaches and provided examples of such an assessment using GIS technologies, remote sensing data and considering climate change and the war factors in Ukraine.
