Course description

“Global Cities” is an elective discipline in the specialty 106 Geography for the Bachelor’s degree educational program, which is taught in the 8th semester in the amount of 4 credits (according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System ECTS). The aim of the course “Global Cities” is to provide students with knowledge about the global nature of cities and the problem of developing a system of indicators for its assessment, the modern organization of the transnational urban system.
The study of the course involves students mastering the basic terms and concepts of globalism and urban planning, understanding the preconditions of the external environment of global cities in geopolitical and geoeconomic terms.
After completing the course, the applicant will know: the main provisions of the concept of “global city”, modern methods of geourban studies, the specifics of the global city network, geographical features of global cities, issues of classification of global cities, growth of economic potential of global cities, features of urban policy, role and the importance of global cities in the global political and economic arena; global trends in urban development.
