Biography

Geographer-reseacher with master’s degrees from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (2009) and the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville (USA, 2017). Author of the book “Cultural Landscapes of Galicia (Ukraine): The Ethics of Human-Nature Relation” (Ladex, Lviv 2020) and articles in the journals Krytyka, Spilne and Politichna Krytyka. Participant of international conferences in the USA, Switzerland; member of the American Association of Geographers (since 2016).

He was born on August 26, 1986 in the village of Skelivka (Felshtyn), Lviv region.
In 2002-2004 he attended Mala Academia Nauk (Junior Academy of Science), section geography. Winner, Second stage of the All- Ukrainian scientific research competition, Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2001-2003).
In 2004 – 2008 he was a student of the geographical faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. He specialized at the Department of Economic and Social Geography. During his student years he made an expedition to the countries of the South Caucasus (2007), Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan (2008).
In 2009 he received a master’s degree in geography (specialty economic and social geography); was the editor of the student newspaper “Lviv Merydian”. From 2009 to 2012 he was PhD student at the Department of Economic and Social Geography. In 2010 he received a scholarship from the Coimbra Group Scholarship Program for Young Researchers from Eastern Neighboring Countries for a research stay at the University of Turku (Finland), Faculty of Humanities, Department of European Ethnology and at the Department of Geography at the University of Presov (National scholarship of the Slovak Republic).
In 2012-2014 – worked at the Center for Urban History of Central and Eastern Europe as the project coordinator “Urban Image Database”; in 2015-2017 he studied for a master’s degree in geography at the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville (USA) as a Fulbright Student and got a master degree in geography with honors.
In 2019 he worked as a researcher in the project Integrated Spatial Development for Amalgamated Hromadas, CANaction School for Urban Studies, Kyiv.
Since 2020 – guest lecturer at the Department of Cultural Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv). Currently Roman Lozynskyi is working on a dissertation on changes in the peri-urban villages of Ukraine in the last decade of the Soviet Union and to this day, with focus on the impact of land privatization on urban planning and cultural landscapes.

In his free time he enjoys adventure multi-day cycling and hiking and vernacular architecture.

    Project leader and author of the idea, Landscapes of Galicia (Ukraine) as Cultural Heritage, https://culturallandscapes.org.ua/
    The project is applied interdisciplinary study of landscapes as a cultural heritage.
    The result of the project was a popular science publication and a website with architectural and planning recommendations for the preservation of cultural landscapes, their restoration and regulation on the example of Galicia. The main threats to the destruction of cultural landscapes and ways to overcome them are presented. Supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.
