Course description

Soil protection and land reclamation is an elective discipline for students majoring in 103 “Earth Sciences” of the educational program “Soil Science and Expert Assessment of Lands” for bachelors. It is taught in the 8th semester in the amount of 3 credits (according to the European Credit Transfer System ECTS).

The course “Soil Protection and Land Reclamation” highlights one of the most topical problems of society – soil protection and reclamation of man-made disturbed lands. This is a problem, whose solution is vital for people to survive. The issues of anthropogenic impact on soils and the related development of degradation processes, in particular the destruction of soil cover, various man-made disturbances of soils and lands due to mining, construction, soil destruction, etc. are considered. The reasons for degradation and their consequences are covered, the geography of soil degradation in Ukraine and the Lviv region is considered, in particular, the estimations of the levels of degradation processes are given. The types and directions of land reclamation, as well as measures for protection and preservation of already reclaimed lands for their further use are characterized.
