Course description

The course “Laboratory methods of environmental research” is a discipline of choice in the specialty 103 “Earth Sciences” for the master’s educational program, which is taught in the 1st semester of the master’s degree in the amount of 5 credits (according to the European Credit Transfer System ECTS).

The course is aimed at theoretical and practical mastering by students of methods of environmental quality research, formation of knowledge, abilities and skills to assess environmental quality using laboratory instruments, equipment of analytical laboratories, mastering the methods of determining the properties of environmental objects, human impact assessment on the environment.

The aim of the course is to form students’ practical (experimental) skills of working on devices used in laboratories; mastering the theoretical foundations of research methods (control) of the state of the environment (soils, water bodies, air, plants).
The objectives of the training course are the formation of knowledge about the organization of sampling of soil, air, water, plants for analytical research; acquisition of knowledge about modern laboratory methods used to assess the state of the environment; acquisition of knowledge about the structure, practical application of devices used in the laboratory; learn to properly and correctly perform laboratory tests according to current standards.
Students will gain knowledge about the ways of sampling of environmental objects, the rules of work in chemical laboratories, requirements for equipment and reagents, the structure of the most common devices in laboratories, the possibilities of their use. The curriculum consists of two content modules; 1) Methodology of environmental research; 2) Methods of analytical quality control of the environment.
