Course description

The discipline of “Fundamentals of Toponymy” is a basic discipline in the specialty 106 “Geography” for the educational program 106 “Geography”, which is taught in the ninth semester for masters, in 3 credits (according to the European Credit Transfer System ECTS).

The purpose of the discipline is to form a scientific awareness of masters about the main stages of development of toponymy as a science, its structure, methodological and categorical apparatus.

The objectives of the discipline are the following: the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of toponymy, formed at the intersection of linguistics, history and geography; tracking the impact of a particular historical period on the formation of the corresponding toponymy; presentation of the dominant influence of hydronyms on derived toponyms: tracking the cult of rivers and reservoirs, plants, animals in Ukrainian toponymy; reflection of the Ukrainian pandemonium in toponymy; comparison of scientific and folk etymology of names in legends and myths; acquaintance with the origin of horonyms, in particular the origin of the national horonym “Ukraine”; tracking modern changes in Ukrainian toponymy in the context of de-imperialization and de-Russification; acquaintance with modern transliteration of geographical names and the process of standardization of geographical names in accordance with international requirements.

The generalizing stage of this course is the individual research work of the master student on the topic: “Toponymic analysis of the selected region” followed by its presentation to the group in Power Point format.
